Wrexham University Partners to Combat Gender-Based Violence
"Join Wrexham University, Wrexham AFC, and Widnes Vikings in a united stand against gender-based violence. Together, we can inspire change, promote respect, and foster a culture where everyone feels safe and valued."
In a strong declaration against gender-based violence, Wrexham University has partnered with Wrexham AFC and the Widnes Vikings to observe White Ribbon Day. This alliance highlights a collective dedication to promoting awareness and effecting significant change through this year’s campaign theme, 'It Starts with MEn.'
In this collaborative effort, the university, along with the football club and the rugby league team, calls on men to take the lead in tackling harmful behaviors and attitudes that contribute to gender-based violence. Lynda Powell, Executive Director of Operations at Wrexham University and Chair of the White Ribbon Action Group, highlighted the importance of this partnership.
“We take great pride in collaborating with Wrexham AFC and Widnes Vikings to highlight the importance of this vital campaign. By addressing damaging behaviors and promoting responsibility, we can encourage significant cultural transformation. Our White Ribbon accreditation demonstrates our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive atmosphere for both students and staff.”
This collaboration takes advantage of the prominent visibility of Wrexham AFC and Widnes Vikings to enhance the campaign's message. Jamie Dixon, who is the Safeguarding, Welfare, and EDI Lead at Wrexham AFC, emphasized the club’s steadfast dedication: 'We are resolutely opposed to domestic violence and abuse, confronting it at every level. Through initiatives like stadium posters and educational outreach, we strive to promote safety and accountability, both on the field and beyond. Everyone has the right to feel safe at home, at work, and in our stadium.'
In a similar vein, Stuart Murphy, Chairman of Widnes Vikings, emphasized the importance of education in the fight against abuse, stating, 'Education and awareness are essential tools in the effort to eliminate violence against women. On White Ribbon Day, we come together to support victims and advocate for healthy, respectful relationships.'
In alignment with the campaign, Wrexham University organized various activities, such as a White Ribbon display at the main reception, discussions focused on combating gender-based violence, and a webinar in partnership with the University of Cumbria. These efforts are designed to promote open conversation and stimulate tangible change within both the academic and local communities.
